Hanging Out at the High Ropes

We were feeling adventurous and so we headed up the hill at YMCA Camp Shady Brook to see what was going on at the challenge course. SO many things to discover and learn!

Jennie found out more about the difference between rope & webbing. Rope is what you use to tie up friends and lift them super high off the ground. Webbing is what you use to trap them up there so they can’t leave. (Oh, Yeti- what will we do with you? Ropes & webbing keep us safe when we’re climbing.)

Helmets are definitely a good idea up here. Lots of things you can bump your head on. And also, there are many many squirrel neighbors that like to eat (and sometimes throw) pinecones down at you. Best to be prepared. These white & green rope things behind me are called lobster claws. They don’t look like lobsters or claws. And they don’t taste like lobster- I already checked. Can anyone help me out here?

I found this cool bucket with TONS of metal things in there. Hooks, bolts, D-rings, staples…. I’m already coming up with so many ideas for what I can build with all of these items. Engineers are good at designing things with available tools. And they know how to make them function. So, I guess I need a welder and an engineer. I’m looking for volunteers, so just let me know if you’re interested!

We had a fantastic time playing with these pipes and hula hoops. You can invent hundreds of games with some basic tools and a lot of creativity. Some of our favorites= practice being an ice cream cone (pictured below), slide down the pipe, fling-a-friend, loop-de-loop-de-loop, and crusher. That last one is more fun for the Stuffies that jump on top of the top pipe than for the friends trapped between the pipes below….

And, this was a wonderful thing to discover! Jennie’s nose led her to a snack bag that had some lunch leftovers in it. We shared the fruit and chips and would have been very content. Unfortunately, there was also a cookie wrapper inside (EMPTY). Would have been better if we’d never found out what we were missing. A certain someone may or may not have vowed revenge on the lunch packers and eaters. (Don’t worry, we’ve got it under control.)

(Pause for a water break. This is thirsty work & it’s very important to stay hydrated.)

Ummm… We may not have had our friends as under control as we thought. Hopefully they’re just having fun climbing. We really hope they’re not setting a trap for the next humans to come to the challenge course without cookies for Stuffies. We’ll keep you posted.
