Carol Makes the Most of Camp
Carol here, reporting to you live from YMCA Camp Shady Brook! As you can see, it’s been a beautiful day here in Deckers, CO. You may remember this self-portrait I painted in Art class. Boy, did I learn a lot about mixing colors and how to use a paint brush. It’s a little tricky for a t-shirt wearing bird with feathers, but I got there in the end. Besides, camp is all about learning new things and going outside your comfort zone.
Speaking of comfort zones, I was a little surprised to be asked to help lifeguard the kayaking class. I know that it takes a lot to become a lifeguard. Exactly how much could a little Eagle do to rescue a full-sized human being? I wasn’t sure if I was the right bird for the job. And then the waterfront staff explained that mostly I’d be just guarding the lifeguarding tube. You know, keeping an eye on it to make sure it didn’t blow into the water or get into any trouble. Now that is something I can handle, for sure. (By the way, no issues. It was very well behaved. And pretty quiet. Maybe it’s shy?)
This activity was the opposite of quiet. And, golly, was it fun! I always knew I loved music. Listening to the birds sing, the sound of the wind in the pines, a good coyote howl- big fan. I just learned today that I love to make music even more. They told me I have good natural rhythm. And I picked up drumming pretty easily. Can’t wait to play some more. I heard they have campfires where people perform. Maybe I’ll be ready for that after more practice?
Here’s something I didn’t need any help with (or practice doing, for that matter). I found the S’mores supplies with the help of this little flashlight. Mini mallows, small cookies, and PB…. best snack ever! It probably would taste a little better if it was warm and toasty. Unfortunately, I haven’t learned to start a fire yet. Maybe later this summer someone can show me how…
It was a beautiful moonlit night at the lake. Time for some reflection. I was lucky enough to be part of this cool program here called the Raggers- that’s why I’m sporting this nifty red bandana. You’ll have to ask someone at camp for more information. It’s a little bit secret and a little bit not. (Humans, what can I say?)
Well, I’m off to get some shut-eye. Tomorrow is going to be another fabulous day here at camp & I want to have plenty of energy for lots more adventures.
See you soon!
