Mysterious Tracks Found on the Lake

Hey, stuffie friends!

It was such a beautiful day here with some lovely powder on the lake. We just had to get out and do some cross-country skiing. We were having a great time talking with our friends the squirrels and birds. There were some ice houses out on the lake, too. Amelia wanted to go over and see if I could catch her some fish, but then we discovered what appeared to be some kind of animal prints all over the snow. What if this is a new friend waiting to play with us? Or someone who wants to give us treats? We had to find out!

They weren’t squirrel or goose tracks (trust us)! They kind of looked like dog prints but what would a dog be doing crossing the lake? Stella usually stays right nearby. We need to follow these tracks carefully and see what we can discover. We started at the edge of the lake and followed the prints all the way across to the reeds.

Maybe these tracks belong to our friend the river otter? Do otters hibernate? We decided to check out the location where we last saw them this summer. They are known to make burrows in the shore but they must be pretty clever at hiding the entrance. We sure couldn’t find it. And maybe they do hibernate because they didn’t hear us calling them! Amelia has a pretty loud honk for a stuffed goose.

Speaking of loud honks, Amelia just made a really good point. What if the tracks belong to the fox that we saw this fall? It was running fast to catch one of my squirrel friends… Oh, no! If it’s a fox that loves to eat geese and squirrels, we just told it exactly where to find us!!! Maybe following tracks that belong to an unknown wild animal is a VERY bad idea. We decided it wasn’t safe to go any further as it might be hiding and then pounce on one or both of us. Instead, we high-tailed it home.

We made it home safely (obviously, that’s how we’re able to write this.) It was a pretty exciting afternoon! If any of our Stuffie friends are better at identifying tracks, let us know. Also, we love having visitors, so come anytime! We have extra skis so you don’t need to pack yours!
