Is it Trash? Or Treasure? Who Decides?

Greetings from Oregon! We finally had a break in the weather long enough to go check out this Art installation at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. We’ve been hearing a lot about it in town and it was definitely worth a stop. Some of these were pretty scary. And some were pretty spiky. See what you think!

Chompers the shark is pretending to be fierce. Guess that’s part of the “artistic” choices it’s making. I say “Hah”! As if that shark could eat a dragon like me! I could just breathe my super-heated fearsome fire on this fish and it will melt to bits! Take that, Chompers! Now who’s afraid?

-Taco

Why is this bird so big? Why are its feathers so spiky and weird? And what’s it called? If it’s a penguin, why isn’t it somewhere cold and snowy? How come penguins can’t fly? Why can some animals fly and others can’t? Can I climb up on its head? If I was on top of its head, what could I see? And can I jump off of it afterwards? What do you mean this isn’t a real bird? It doesn’t seem imaginary-oh, wait, am I floating? What does it feel like to float on an invisible penguin? You’ll have to try it to find out!

-Fajita

What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fssshh. Hah, hah! Jokes are the best, especially when someone’s having a bad day. I myself am having a good day because I snuck some coffee this morning. Katie was busy doing something else and the french press was open. What a day, what a day!

-Sneaks

Spikes are good for lots of things. Maybe they help you hold on during a windy day. Maybe they make a sculpture look cooler. Maybe they’re good for breaking into a bank vault. That’s the cool thing about Art- you get to decide what it means and what it’s for… I’ve gotta go. Quick errand to do with this little… hmm, hmm, hmmm….

-Yeti

The beautiful thing about Art is that it can be an avenue into your imagination. It can create a sense of awe and wonder. And everyone has their own opinion about the nature of art and how it connects to the human story on our beautiful planet. When Art has a message to teach us and gives us a chance to make the world a better place, well, that’s the best of all possibilities. I especially enjoy the opportunity to teach my young Fajita about how Art and Nature go hand in hand.

It’s such a beautiful day. Join with me as I take a moment and breathe and watch the birds flying overhead… Wait, why is Yeti tearing down the street from the bank with a police car chasing her? Excuse me, I need to go help out a friend.

Greetings from Minnesota! On our way to the Cities recently, we stopped by Franconia Sculpture Park (near Taylors Falls). It is truly an amazing park! We hope Yeti and all our friends can see this park on their next visit.

While they have a lot of signs not to climb on sculptures, we totally agreed that only applied to humans since they’re so big and could cause damage. This one is pretty interesting. We like how it reaches up to the sky and has all these cool curves. It would be fun to slide down, but we think that might break it. Or us. Better not.

We were intrigued and confused by this “rock”. When we read the sign, we found out it actually represented a smashed car! That makes no sense at all! If anything, it looks like a turtle. Who gets to decide these things?

This one looks like a person. We’re not sure what exactly is going on, but it looks like they just won something! A proud stance, for sure! Maybe they just finished making a cake and it’s around here somewhere for us to eat?

We liked this one made out of old radios and boom boxes the most. Scottie tried to get some to play music by pushing buttons. Flicker laughed because he knew you have to plug things like this in and there wasn’t any electricity nearby. And Loonie laughed even harder when Scottie thought it was working. The music he heard was just Wol the Owl singing loudly whenever Scottie pushed a button.

We were having such a terrific time that the staff came over to see what we were up to. We gave an impromptu concert and sang “Blackbird” by the Beatles with a 4-part harmony. Our singing was so beautiful we got a standing ovation! Wol the Owl said they were standing only because the ground was too wet to sit down. Either way, we were the hit of the day!
