Amelia and Scottie "Help" Make A Birthday Cake

Hey, stuffie friends!

Great news! When we woke up on Saturday, we discovered that there was some special baking going on. It had been several days since there were any new and delicious smells coming out of the kitchen. So when the smell of chocolate hit us, we knew it was time to start eavesdropping.

Turns out treats were being made for a very important person’s birthday. (She’s important to us because she does all the baking of delicious chocolatey things. And other treats.) We didn’t want to miss any of the action. And we didn’t want anyone to eat the cake without us.

So we got up at midnight. Problem is- it’s very hard to stay awake when you’re up late. We tried everything we could think of to stay awake. Luckily, the only person we woke up was AK. She was nearly as excited as we were about the birthday. And then we all fell asleep. Oops!

Not to fear- the chocolate cake was still intact in the morning. It had some weird yellow filling. Scottie is braver than I am and will eat almost anything. When he tasted it, he discovered it was lemon custard - his favorite.

Glancing over to the stove, I noticed something even more amazing. I told Scottie we'd better check it out! Scottie easily jumped over and I just flew right up.

Well, check this out- we learned how to make chocolate frosting! We did a lot of careful stirring and paid close attention to the magic stick thingy with numbers. The chocolate started to bubble and Scottie wanted to jump right in. Luckily, I stopped him before he singed his fur and ruined the frosting.

It sure was hard to wait for the frosting to cool down! When it was just cool enough, we spread it over the cake. Then we had to wait some more because “it wasn’t time to celebrate yet.”

Just when we thought things couldn't get any better than a yummy cake, we saw her get the big mixer out and make a batch of cookies! She must have gotten tired of chocolate since she put in dried cranberries into her famous breakfast cookies. We waited out of sight until she left the cookies cooling on the counter. Scottie said, "I just have to try them." We rushed right over before anyone came back into the kitchen.

Wow! These are great! We had already taken a big bite out of one, so we just had to finish the cookie. Otherwise they would have noticed. So we gobbled it up to get rid of the evidence. Then we disappeared downstairs into our secret hiding place. (That way no one will discover what happened. Besides, there were so many so we doubt they missed one…).

Of course eating made us tired, so we took a nap. All of a sudden we heard noise at the dining table. We discovered the birthday cake had been cut & the celebration was happening. We were invited to have a small piece. I guess “small” depends upon your definition. Ours was perfectly sized - as big as us!

The cake was wonderful. Rumor has it that some of the cake is getting delivered to some of the north country families this week. We are hoping to get another piece before then. In the meantime, we know where they’re keeping the cookies.
